Within about five weeks of Columbus Day 2026, several of Stonington's regular food stops change. The Saturday farmers market moves inside the Velvet Mill. A bakery that started at the Mill opens a full cafe on Stonington Road. A Pawcatuck bagel shop closes its small counter on Mechanic Street and reopens around the corner with a dining room. Stone Acres Farm moves its suppers into the Manor House, and Stonington Vineyards has pop-ups on the calendar well into November. None of these places is closing for the season. Each one is moving into more space or a different room.
Most of these changes have a date attached, and a couple come with a short gap in service. Here is the order they happen in and what to know before you go.
The Saturday Market Moves Inside the Velvet Mill
The Stonington Village Farmers Market is run by the Stonington Village Improvement Association. SVIA describes it as a year-round Saturday event. It runs outdoors from Memorial Weekend through mid-October. Then it moves indoors to the Velvet Mill's back room, the one closest to Meadow Avenue, and keeps the same 9 a.m. to noon hours through late fall, winter and spring.
The indoor season appears to have started already this year. The Velvet Mill's October calendar says the market "is now open Saturdays from 9AM-12PM in the Plaza room inside of the Velvet Mill" at 22 Bayview Ave. It lists market Saturdays on October 10, 17, 24 and 31.
SVIA doesn't post an exact switchover date for 2026, only "mid-October." If you're unsure on a given Saturday, start at the Plaza room, since that's the location the Mill's own calendar lists for this month.
Zest Opens a Second Room on Stonington Road
The Velvet Mill matters to this fall for another reason. It's home to Zest's bakery, and Zest is the first business on this list to add space this season.
The South County Star reported in June that Zest was opening a cafe at 829 Stonington Road. It takes up a 900-square-foot section of the building that houses Heidi's Curated Living. Owner Gabriella Withrow has brought in Stacey Herr as culinary director. The new menu adds sandwiches, salads and charcuterie boards to the Zest coffee, rotating pastries and baked goods the brand already sells, including scones, muffins, dessert bars, carrot cake and whoopie pies.
This is an expansion, not a move. The Velvet Mill bakery and Zest's Ledyard coffee shop were both expected to stay open. In practice, Zest will be in two places in Stonington. The Mill location sits a few doors from the indoor market on Saturday mornings. The Stonington Road cafe has a lunch menu the bakery never had.
The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce and the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting for Zest Cafe on Tuesday, October 13. The Chamber listing gives two different start times, so check it before you plan around the ceremony.
Flour Shop Bagels Takes a Short Break Before Palmer Street
The next move has a gap in it, and it's the one most likely to change your weekday breakfast.
Flour Shop Bagels, the sourdough bagel shop at 20 Mechanic St. in downtown Pawcatuck, has bought the Whistle Stop building at 15 Palmer St. and plans to move there, Patch reported in August. The shop announced the new space this way:
"Our new location will feature a dining room, a huge patio for relaxing in the warmer months, and many other upgrades that you've been asking for (and some you didn't know you needed!) Best of all, more space=more bagels!"
The building has some history. It once housed Universal Food Store and later a pizzeria. The shop planned "some light renovations" and aimed to move before the holiday season.
The timing comes from co-owner Jon Young. He owns the shop with his wife, Hannah Young, and told the South County Star he would probably close the Mechanic Street shop after Columbus Day and reopen about two weeks later on Palmer Street. Columbus Day is Monday, October 12 this year. If that plan holds, the Mechanic Street counter could go quiet in mid-October and Palmer Street could open around the last week of the month.
Neither source has confirmed an opening date since August. Treat "about two weeks" as the owners' estimate from August, not a schedule, and check the shop's own channels before you count on a bagel during that stretch.
The new space changes how the shop works for customers. Until now, Flour Shop has run breakfast and lunch out of a small downtown counter. Palmer Street will have a dining room. Like Zest, it is adding seats in the season when you're more likely to want to eat indoors.
Stone Acres Farm Moves Its Suppers Into the Manor House
Stone Acres Farm at 393 N. Main St. has one big outdoor evening left before its dinners move inside.
On Monday, October 26, Stone Acres, 85th Day and 2Primo are hosting a Halloween "Moonlight Social." The Chamber listing runs it from 6 to 10:30 p.m. and includes live music, bonfires, food and drink, and vendors. The Resy listing for the same evening gives a 5 p.m. start, so confirm the time before you go.
About ten days later, the Stone Acres Supper Club starts "Winter Nights" on November 5 in the farm's historic Manor House. The listing describes it as a supper club rooted in New England, and reservations are on Resy. The full 2026 dinner calendar isn't posted there yet, so the start date is the only firm date for now.
The farm's Visit Us page posts these fall hours:
| Wednesday to Friday | Saturday and Sunday | |
|---|---|---|
| Farmstand | 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. | 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
| Farmstand Kitchen | 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. | 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. |
The kitchen is closed Monday and Tuesday. The page doesn't say what year these hours apply to or when winter hours start, so confirm them before a weekday trip in November.
Stonington Vineyards Keeps Going Into November
Stonington Vineyards on Taugwonk Road is the one place on this list whose fall calendar gets busier as the month goes on. It's open daily from noon to 6 p.m. and closed on Thanksgiving. From November through April, it offers tours at noon on Fridays and Sundays.
The vineyard's fall pop-up schedule and the Chamber calendar list these dates:
- Saturday, October 10: a fall pop-up with G Pa's Fired Pizza, 3 to 6 p.m.
- Saturday, October 24: a Halloween family event from 2 to 5 p.m. with children's author Jane Carlson Pickering.
- Saturday, November 7: South County BBQ, paired with the Tarzan Brown Mystic Road Race. Runners who show a bib or medal get 10% off a glass of wine.
- Sunday, November 8: the 10 a.m. Wine Run Turkey Trot 5K, a Thanksgiving-themed race, followed by Izzy Malek from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and Fire in the Kitchen.
- Saturday, November 14: South County BBQ returns.
November 7 and 8 make a busy weekend. A road race, a 5K and two food trucks fall within about 24 hours of each other, and all of them tie into the vineyard. The posted schedule ends on November 14. The vineyard doesn't call that the last pop-up of the season.
Other Indoor Events in October
Two more events this month round out the indoor shift. Mystic Seaport Museum at 75 Greenmanville Ave. is running "What Lurks Beneath: GHOST SHIP" from October 9 through October 30. It's a new immersive Halloween theater event produced with New York-based Clockjack Productions, according to This Is Mystic. Earlier this month, the Stonington Literary Festival marked the James Merrill Centennial from October 2 to 4. It held 30 events in seven Stonington venues with more than 40 presenters.
Here is how the next five weeks line up:
- Most firmly set: the market in the Plaza room every Saturday at 9 a.m., and the vineyard open daily from noon to 6 p.m.
- Planned but not yet confirmed: the Flour Shop move, which hasn't been confirmed since August.
- Posted but undated: Stone Acres' farmstand hours.
If you're making plans for mid-October through mid-November, the market and the vineyard are the safest bets, and the Flour Shop opening is the one to confirm first.
